Taipei City (台北市) is the economic, political and cultural center of Taiwan Island. It is also the capital of the Republic of China (ROC). From the perspective of the communist-ruled People’s Republic of China (PRC), Taipei City is the provincial capital of Taiwan Province.
Taipei City (台北市) started as a major fishing and sea trading hub serving the communities living in southern China. Towards the end of the Qing Dynasty, it was colonized by Japan until the end of World War Two before being returned to Chinese rule. At the end of the Chinese Civil War, the retreating Kuomintang government resettled the ROC government in Taiwan.
The people in Taiwan, including Taipei City (台北市), utilized the traditional form of writing Chinese similar to the version used in Hong Kong. This is different from the simplified Chinese used in places like China and Singapore. However, the spoken form has no differences.
Major tourist attractions include the National Palace Museum, Taipei 101 and the National Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall.
When the Kuomintang government retreated to Taiwan after the Chinese Civil War, they brought along important collections of ancient Chinese artifacts. As a result, the National Palace Museum in Taipei City (台北市) comes to house some of the most important Chinese antiques that are not available in mainland China.
Taipei 101 is Taiwan’s tallest building and represents the largest and most complex engineering project in the history of Taiwan construction industry. The design of the building reflected concepts of traditional Chinese beliefs such as the used of the number 8, a number considered to be auspicious in Chinese culture. Eight-floor structural unites are connected on top of each other to form one block. Every eighth floor is an autonomous space to deflect wind damages. The structure increases in size as it gets higher reflecting the flexible and persistent bamboo that rises into the sky.
The National Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall serves as a multifunctional, social education and cultural center that exhibits revolutionary artifacts related to Dr Sun Yat-sen history. The memorial hall includes an internationally renowned performance hall, expansive exhibition venues and a professional library with over 300,000 collections of books.
