The Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport is one of the two major airports in Shanghai City. The other airport is the Shanghai Pudong International Airport which caters primarily to international flights. The Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport on the other hand serves primarily the domestic flights within China.
The Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport is located on the western edge of Shanghai City in Changning District, as compared to the better known Shanghai Pudong International Airport which resides on the eastern edge of Shanghai City in Pudong District.
Both airports are connected to the subway called the Shanghai Metro Line 2. It is possible to catch a flight transfer by taking the Metro Line 2 between these 2 airports. In addition, the Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport is linked to the new Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station as part of the Hongqiao Comprensive Transportation Hub. The Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station is currently the most modern railway station in China and serves primarily the high-speed railway lines including the upcoming Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed line.
The Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport is closer to Shanghai City and is well connected by bus lines and taxi services. The Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport serves as the main international airport for Shanghai City for many years before the completion of the newer Pudong International Airport. As such, there are some older expat districts near the Hongqiao Airport.
