Shenzhen City (深圳市) is a major city in southern Guangdong Province’s Pearl River Delta region just immediately north of Hong Kong. It is one of the earliest cities to be granted Special Economic Zones (SEZs) status which include special economic policies and flexible governmental measures aimed at fostering economic reforms.
Its proximity to Hong Kong as well as its enterprising and hardworking population has transformed what was a fishing village less than 30 years ago to one of the richest and most economically successful cities in China. It has a vibrant financial sector with many commercial banks setting up offices in Shenzhen. The Shenzhen Stock Exchange is one of the most important exchanges in Asia.
Famous tourist attractions in Shenzhen City include the Window of the World, the Chinese Folk Culture Village, Splendid China and the Safari Park.
The Window of the World is a massive theme park with real size replicas of the world’s famous heritage structures such as the Eiffel Tower, Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Egyptian Pyramid.
The Chinese Folk Culture Village on the other hand offers a fascinating introduction to the cultures of the 56 ethnic groups that made up modern China.
The Splendid China is an attraction that exhibits scaled down replicas of major Chinese heritages such as the terracotta warriors, the Great Wall of China and the Forbidden City.
